Can you imagine traveling to the very Turkish Cappadocia without taking a plane? And what if I told you that just over an hour from Granada capital there is a landscape from another planet with canyons over 100 meters, fairy chimneys, cave houses, and even balloon flights? Well, stop imagining because the Granadian Cappadocia exists and is waiting for you in the north of the province to leave you speechless.

For years, this treasure has remained hidden from the eyes of mass tourism, but since it was declared a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2020, more and more curious travelers are encouraged to discover these lunar landscapes that have nothing to envy their Turkish cousins. And believe me, after visiting it, you will understand why National Geographic and other international media can’t stop talking about this magical corner of our Andalusia.
A 25-million-year journey back in time
To understand the magic of this place, we have to go back several million years. Where today we see a desert and arid landscape, there was once a huge freshwater lake that covered much of the current province of Granada. When the tectonic plates decided to dance, this lake broke and drained into the Guadalquivir valley, leaving behind a blank canvas for the wind, rain, and time to sculpt a natural masterpiece.
The result is what we now know as the Gorafe Desert and the Granada Plateau, an area that encompasses the regions of Guadix, Baza, Huéscar, and Los Montes, with more than 47 towns that hold millennial secrets among their canyons and ravines.
The most spectacular landscapes: Badlands and Los Coloraos
The Badlands: where silence has a sound

The first mandatory stop on your adventure through the Granadian Cappadocia is the Badlands, although there’s nothing bad about them. Here you’ll find a labyrinth of ravines, gullies, and the famous white clay fairy chimneys that will transport you directly to the landscapes of Turkey.
The most impressive thing about this place is not just what you see, but what you hear… or rather, what you don’t hear. The silence here is so profound that you can almost hear it. It’s an almost mystical experience to be surrounded by these geological formations while the only sound is the wind whispering between the canyons.
Los Coloraos: our own Grand Canyon

If the Badlands remind you of Cappadocia, Los Coloraos will take you directly to the Grand Canyon. This area, with its impressive red and ochre clay canyons, changes color according to the light of the day. At sunrise and sunset, the spectacle is so stunning that you’ll want to stay and live right there.
The canyons reach heights of over 100 meters, and the layers of sediments tell the story of millions of years of geological evolution. It’s like an open book where each stratum is a different chapter in the history of the Earth.
Gorafe: much more than a desert
The village of the 240 dolmens
But wait, this doesn’t end here. Gorafe not only boasts one of the most breathtaking landscapes in Spain, but it also hosts the largest megalithic complex in the Iberian Peninsula. We’re talking about 240 dolmens spread across 11 necropolises, many of them in a state of preservation that will leave you amazed.

The Megalithism Interpretation Center is a must-stop to understand how our ancestors from 5,000 years ago chose this place for their funeral rituals. And no, it wasn’t by chance: the views from here were already spectacular back then.
A starry sky that takes your breath away

As if all this weren’t enough, Gorafe has the Starlight certification as one of the best skies in Europe for astronomical observation. Imagine: you’re in the middle of the desert, surrounded by absolute silence, and above your head unfolds a blanket of stars so dense it seems like you could touch them with your hand.
Guadix: the capital of cave houses
About 30 minutes from Gorafe, we find Guadix, one of the oldest human settlements in the Iberian Peninsula and the world capital of cave houses. We’re not talking about a few tourist caves, but more than 2,000 inhabited troglodyte dwellings that maintain a constant temperature of 20 degrees throughout the year.
The neighborhoods of Las Ermitas and Las Cuevas are a true open-air museum where underground life has been part of the local DNA for centuries. Climbing to viewpoints like La Magdalena or Cuatro Veredas will gift you panoramic views that confirm why this place is known as the Spanish Cappadocia.
Hot air ballooning over a sea of fairy chimneys
What would Cappadocia be without hot air balloon flights? Well, we have them here too. Companies like Glovento Sur offer sunrise flights over the Granada Plateau, with the Sierra Nevada as a backdrop.

The experience of floating over the gullies while the sun paints the landscape golden is something that can’t be described in words. Sleeping in a cave house
Forget about conventional hotels. Here, the experience involves sleeping in a genuine cave house. Places like Cuevas Al Jatib in Baza or Hábitat Troglodita Almagruz in Purullena have transformed these ancestral dwellings into accommodations with all modern comforts while maintaining their essence.

The feeling of sleeping underground, with that constant temperature and absolute silence, is something you will never forget. And no, it’s not claustrophobic: the caves are spacious, bright, and perfectly ventilated.
